(English Toy Terrier, Toy Manchester Terrier) The Manchester Terrier, which resembles a Doberman Pinscher (but is not related) is divided into two varieties, the Toy and the Standard in North America. (In England, these are considered two separate breeds.).  It is a small, compact breed with smooth coat. The head is long and tapering head. The ears for the Standard are V-shaped, and are accepted if they naturally folded over, pricked up, or cropped.  The ears of the Toy must be naturally erect. The almond shaped eyes are small and dark, the nose is black, the teeth form a scissors bite. The back, or "topline" has a slight arch, reflecting the breed's descent from the Whippet. The tail is short and tapers to a point. The single coat is black and tan.

Character

Both varieties of Manchester Terrier are intelligent and cunning dogs, and can be headstrong. They need firm obedience training, and will be quite loyal to their family. They should be socialized from an early age in order to prevent future aggression. They love to be the center of attention and should not be left alone for long periods of time or they will become bored and destructive, and will bark incessantly. They are high-spirited and enjoy playing games.  Because they were bred to catch rats, do not leave them alone with smaller pets such as hamsters or mice, or instinct will take over.

Manchester Terriers are independent creatures, but still require love and affection.

General Health

Over the past few years, North American breeders have noticed the presence of a heart problem called cardiomyopathy, which has killed many puppies. Some lines are prone to glaucoma (eye disease). Some lines are afflicted with Legges‑Calves‑Perthes – which causes deterioration of the femur, hypothyroidism, and  von Willebrand's Disease  - a bleeding disorder similar to hemophilia in humans. When properly cared for, the Manchester can live for around fifteen years.

History

The Manchester Terrier was bred by crossing a Black and Tan Terrier and a Whippet, in order to hunt rats and other vermin in 1800s England; However, this is debatable as some believe the Manchester Terrier is a direct descendant of the English Black and Tan Terrier. The Toy variety became popular during the reign of Queen Victoria. The breed was recognized by the American Kennel Club in 1886.

Maintenance

The Manchester Terrier has a short coat which requires little or no grooming. The standard Manchester is an average shedder, while the Toy sheds very little. Make sure you clean the ears and clip the toenails.

Ideal Environment

The Manchester Terrier will do all right in an apartment, as long as they are exercised on a regular basis. They like to run on the leash, and thus make excellent jogging or biking companions. Because they have a tendency to chase cars or bikers, do not let them off the leash except in a secure area.

Dog Training!

If you're having problems training your dog or getting control, you should read our review of DogProblems.com. Adam will do whatever it takes to help you whip your dog into shape. I've used them to help with my Great Dane as well as help friends train their dogs. It's the first place I go to help answer users Questions. Many training issues are too extensive to answer in this forum, which is why I refer a lot of the load to his site. Update: I've been using and recommending DogProblems for three years now. I, as well as my users, value the techniques we've learned. I get weekly emails from users who have become better owners from the information they received.

Manchester Terrier Q&A

Ask a Question
Photo

Why would my 2 year old dog start eating every thing including his bedding, then getting sick trying to get all this junk out of his tummy? Sometimes he does this as much as three times a day.

Usually this is happening due to lack of vitamins. Try to give him few pieces of apples or a carrot.
