(Mioritic Shepherd Dog)The Mioritic Sheepdog is a massive breed from Romania, looking even larger with its abundant long and fluffy light-colored coat over a dense undercoat. The basic color is usually white, cream or pale gray, occasionally with patches of these colors. A single litter can have a mix of pure white and grey/white dogs. The head is large, with a broad, slightly arched skull. The eyes, either amber or hazel, are medium sized and slightly oval in shape, framed by pendant ears. The nose is large and black. The teeth close in a scissors bite. The powerful neck is medium in length, the body is rectangular, the back is straight and well-muscled. The chest is broad and deep. The shoulders are also broad, the elbows slightly arched. Both fore and back legs are held underneath the body. The long tail is carried hanging downward until the dog is in action, when it is carried high. The ears and tail may be cropped.
add infoThe Mioritic Sheepdog is an excellent flock or guard dog, and makes a wonderful pet. They become very attached to their owners, especially children but are suspicious and sometimes aggressive with strangers.
add infoNo major health problems are known. Properly cared for, this breed lives for about 12 to 14 years.
add infoThe Mioritic Sheepdog has its origins in the Carpathian mountains of Romania. The standard was written by the Romanian Kennel Club in 1981, but not recognized by the FCI (Fédération Cynologique Internationale) until 1995. The RKC standard was revised in 2002.
add infoThe Mioritic must be brushed on a weekly basis to prevent matting of the coat, and the ears must be cleaned on a regular basis.
add infoA Mioritic Sheepdog makes an excellent family pet, but is not suitable for a an apartment or house with a small yard. They need room for plenty of exercise, and indeed, are quite playful on their won. The yard must be fenced in as they do not care for strangers.
