(Polish Lowland Sheepdog) (Valee Sheepdog) (Berge Polonais de Vallee) The Polski Owczarek Nizinny (Polish Lowland Sheepdog) is a medium sized herding dog.  The breed’s square head is covered in long flowing hair.  Covered by more hair are their long ears and round eyes which are rarely seen.  These dogs also have beards flowing off their short rectangular muzzles.  Their broad necks, square bodies, and medium length legs give them an unusual look, almost like a miniature version of an Old English Sheepdog.  Their fur is very thick and flowing with an abundance of hair on their head and feet especially.  Coat colors are commonly black, grey, or white but all colors are accepted.

The Polish Lowland Sheepdog is a friendly and sometimes stubborn dog.  Friendly and social with family members and familiar children, the Polish Lowland Sheepdog is loving and affectionate.  However, they are wary with strangers.  They do well with small animals but will fight a dog if their dominance is challenged.  The breed is sweet most of the time, but they will become aggressive if provoked.  This dog is often eager to please, but they also are independent and have a mind of their own.  Intelligence also makes this a stubborn dog which will not always listen to training.  One main bad habit of this breed is their tendency to nip at people’s ankles.

The Polish Owczarek Nizinny probably came from Asian herding dogs that were working in Hungary thousands of years ago.  While those dogs had a corded coat, this breed is shaggier like the herding dogs found in the rest of Europe.  For this reason, some historians have speculated that the Polish Owczarek Nizinny could be a genetic link between the two types of breeds.  After World War II, the breed was devastated and almost extinct.  A handful of dedicated breeders revived the dog and helped it regain its status as a popular dog in Poland and in other parts of the world.

Grooming is fairly easy to do for the Polish Lowland Sheepdog.  Brushing should be done once a week because their wirehaired coat can become matted easily.  Exercise is extremely important like it is for all herding breeds.  A large yard should be provided for running, and the breed would particularly enjoy getting to use their herding abilities.  Herding is great for them because it also provides mental stimulation.

Ideal Environment

The Polish Lowland Sheepdog is a good family dog.  Family members and familiar children will be treated affectionately.  This breed is good with other animals but may be aggressive with dogs who challenge their dominance.  Cool climates are good for this breed.  The Polish Lowland Sheepdog can live in an apartment but needs to have a job and somewhere to run.  This breed requires training and socialization with people.  This breed will nip at people’s heels so training them out of that behavior is important.

Polski Owczarek Nizinny Q&A

Ask a Question

I've heard that Polski Owczarek Nizinny dogs are hypo-allergenic. Is this true? I've read that they shed a little - is that really accurate?

Our PON sheds very little but we do brush her once to twice a week. She sheds no more than our poodle cross. I am not sure if they are hypo allergenic they do carry alot of stuff in because of their hair. Not for neat and tidy house in that they drip from their beards when they drink. But its all worth it we love our PON and couldn't imagine not having her in our life.
