I have one and I live in Wisconsin. She loves the snow and doesnt mind the cold weather. She would play outside all day in the single digits if I let her...but I don't. Maybe they mean they wouldn't do well if they had to live outside in the cold since they are native to the warm south. I had one of these as boy. That thing was very smart. Even my father an avid coon hunter swore he was. I would love to have another but. How are thay around other dogs? I have a couple of weenie dogs and my wife will kill me if it killed one of them. With the dogs best health in mind, I would say they could live anywhere a short to medium hair dog could. SC and GA both get cold in the winter and they lived for years without mans assistance in the wet swamps and flooded plains. I have a 3 year old Carolina Dog, and she is really great with other dogs, especially weenie dogs. The only issue is that the she is insistent on being the alpha dog and likes to hog all the toys. She may playfully use her teeth, but she would never ever bite. She does freak out and gets really defensive, however, when little dogs bite or nip her. This may be something to consider. I have a three year old Carolina dog, we also have one old fat female Pit Bull and 3 live stock guard dogs (LGD). I find that if I get a puppy and it grows up around this lot all is well. If you get a young Carolina dog, I think you will have the same situation. Mine is very playful and drives all the other dogs nuts wanting to play. My Carolina dog showed up one day, followed one of my LGD's home, both were laying under my truck, truck started growling, long monotone growl. Finally figured out why my truck was growling, a 10 lb puppy was under it with the LGD. It looked hungry so went and got the pup a decent size scoop of dog food, about 2 or 3 cup size, poured it out about three feet from the pup, he attacked the food, ate it all, finished and jumped into my lap, all happy and wiggly. He has been my best buddy every since. He meets all the criteria for a Carolina Dog, 50 lbs, very lean and muscular, erect ears when it suits him, can look very serious at times, wrinkles the forehead and tilt his head while looking at me, a very smart dog. He is brown, medium coat, protective of my wife and I, did I say very smart, he is very smart, learns very quickly, wants to learn and help. I have cattle and goats, he helps to some degree, though he thinks he is really out there to chase them all. Lily loves to run, you can see the enjoyment in her face! As for having other dogs in the home, I have one other. Sadie is a Lab-Rottweiler mix and weighs in at 115 lbs. The two get along great. The trick to the Carolina dog is that you have to be the Alpha as they have strong personalities and want to be dominant dog. They learn quickly but you need patience and consistant, kind discipline to lead and get the response you want from this one. She likes to tunnel in it and she doesn't seem to mind the cold, either. She requires a lot of exercise and as mentioned in other postings,. she is struggling to be the alpha and is a bit rough with my 12 lb terrier (who actually does hold his own but it can be loud and chaotic and I have to give them time out). I live in Maine and my 3 yr old Carolina does fine in all weather. He doesn't like the frigid temperatures and will only stay out long enough to go to the bathroom. Then he comes in, sits in front of the heater and cleans snow out from his toes. However, when the weather isn't too bad, he'll chase the snowballs my son throws. In the summer, he's just a ball of energy and will do anything to play in the water. I have found him to be pretty adaptable to just about every situation he's been placed in. The only things I've found he really can't handle well are small spaces (kennels) and being alone. I bought a Thundershirt for him and it works great, he even asks for it if he feels nervous! |
