Shih Tzu Q&A

I adopted a 2 year old male GP this week. He walks well on a leash with a flat collar and prong collar. His hips are fine. I know how to train a dog to sit by holding the treat over their nose or head so that they have to look up and naturally go into a sitting position. When I do that, my dog just backs up. I have tried pushing his rear down, but I have to push so hard I am afraid I will hurt him. I had tried it with 2 people using the prong collar and having someone tuck his bottom down at the same time. He just stands there like a mule. He will sit when he wants to, so he is capable of sitting. I do reward him when he sits on his own and say good sit. I know GP's are stubborn and I have experience owning dominant "stubborn" dogs (Samoyeds). Any suggestions would be appreciated. If you tell me to give up and not expect him to do it, I will accept that recommendation too. Also, He will not jump into my car. I have to put treats inside the car, lure him over and then pick his front legs up and put them in the car and then lift his rear into the car. Any thoughts? I also know that he is still adjusting to a new home.

Having been a Pyr parent for a while now let me help you a little bit. They are beyond stubborn, often to the point of insubordination almost! The treat trick may work for you after a while, but I found that a good collar training teaches them also. Now the male and female are two different stories, the female is receptive to some training and she has learned, or should I say accepted the commands. The male on the other hand just ignores me. But shockingly enough they both listen to my children. So you can try and pull your hair out trying to teach them, or you can accept the fact that we are living in their world and they will do what they want to do.
