I have had my Amstaff since she was 8weeks old and my daughter was 6mths they grew up togeter and now my dog is more protective of her that anyone in the family. It takes time and patients, but as my daughter got older she became the dominate owner at the age of 3. Its not impossible my dog knows who's in charge and that is most important.

A good way to train any breed of dog to be well behaved around kids is to act like a kid around them and reward them for good behavior. Without hurting the dog, tug it's ear, poke at it's teeth, grab its tail, etc and when the dog is good and doesn't react, then reward with a treat. If you start this with an 8 week old pup, I bet he would be great with kids. Another aspect to think of is the noise level, so maybe turn the TV up while doing this exercise. Don't badger the dog, just get him used to that behavior while making it a positive thing for him.

This breed is fantastic around children, as long as it knows that you are the leader of the pack. if you are not committed to training and still want a dog, I suggest you get a smaller breed such as King Charles Spaniel.

I recently purchased this breed, and I have two children 5 and 2. And he does okay, just some reinforcements which will come with any puppy. Another good breed, is a boxer. This is from personal experience also. I don't know how my amstaff will act as an adult because hes only 5 months, but is doing really well. but my boxer does really well with both of my kids.

This breed is ESPECIALLY excellent around children.

They are really good with young children.

I got my first pit at 6 months and she has always been wonderful with kids. She spent sometime with my friends 3 year old who drug her all over. I really believe it is something that they just inherently understand. All of my pits have been good with kids.

yes it is i have been with American Staffordshire Terrier since i was brought home from the hospital and so have my 2 other sisters and my 1 brother

I am also asking myself the same question. My Kids r 2 and 4 and i'm extremeley weiry that the dog will accidently bite. And w this strong of a dog, the damage can be severe! I love love love these dogs, I've had a pit before but not w children. I just want my kids safe but can't seem to find another dog that i love like this one. Also my pain in the ass neighbor tells me my homeowners will drop me if they find out i have a pit. She owns a boxer and was very nervous w my first pit. please reassure me and tell me what u think, i appriciate it thanks

I cant believe how smart my boy dog has become. We just got a female pit to accompany my Amstaff 17 month old. He blocks and creates a barrier between the 12week old puppy from jumping on my 8month old daughter. When I bring my daughter close to his face, he bows his head in down between my legs while im crouching. Its important to establish who are the alphas in the house.

Children also need to be trained around dogs! Teach your kids not to touch your dogs when they are asleep or eating. My kids are 6 and 8 and from the day they were born they have had contact with Staff breeds. They have been trained not to abuse our dogs and to respect them. They now have a wonderful loving and affectionate relationship with our 5 dogs. But when your kids a little I would not advise that you leave them alone with your dogs.
