Silky Terrier Q&A

My femaie amstaff is approximately 7 yrs old (we rescued her and they weren't positive on her age). She has always had healthy teeth and gums, but recently i notice her left jowl is drooping severly - she is slobbering excessively and even the sounds of her eating and drinking have changed. The rest of her face seems to be fine, no other symptoms or changes in behavior. Has anyone ever ran into this before? Not sure if it would be a gum issue or possibly something more severe.

She needs to see a vet/dentist for at least a tooth cleaning and good assessment. She will probably need sedation as unprofessional are shy about putting hands into powerful, possibly painful jaws of awake dogs. There may be medicines you can add to her food and water to help with teeth health if she has not been trained to accept tooth brushing. Around 8 years dogs reach an old age level and if not cared for their teeth get infected and drop out. In a wild dog pack that is how the younger dogs succeed in becoming alpha over the older, more experienced leaders. jjoan
