Standard Poodle Q&A

I have always admired Rotties from afar. I had a friend who had one, and he was the biggest, loviest baby when it came to friends and family. Now, however, I have a 19-month old daughter, and my fiance has a 3 year old and a 5 year old. He loves Rotties, too, but we're concerned because they're such big dogs. Has anyone ever had an issue with one around children? They seem to have bad reputations with people who've never had one, as I've caught a lot of heat for even suggesting getting a Rottie while I have small children.. but they seem like such loyal, loving pets if given proper attention and love, like anything else... Any feedback on the issue would be greatly appreciated.

I have had two rotties, and have 2 children. As long as you are willing to out the work in that is needed to train one, they are brilliant family pets and will do anything for the kids. Childrens age 3 & 8

Hi rotties are lovely pets for families with young children, we have 2 rotties one 9month male and the other a 3month female and also have a labrador of 2 years, they get on great with her we have 2 young boys at 2 and 5months, like any dog you would never leave a dog in room with children, i would recomend you get a pup though just so you can train him/her as you want them re;around children etc. all in all very loyal loving dogs.

I grew up with a rotti, uncle got her when I was like a year old. best dog ever my mom used to say that if Tia had been able to dail 911 she would have left me there with her. She'd never let me get close to the drive way or sidewalks. Even when i was old enough to she'd still try to herd me back on track. If strangers came close to the yard Tia would put herself between me and them. You just have to socialize them and train them but the others are right get a puppy that way there isn't a jealousy issue. But I'd talk to a breeder, a good one, not a wannabe. and before you choose a puppy if you get one look at the parents if you can and see how the interact with strangers. If they are least bit agressive don't get a puppy from that breeder. i would even talk a vet to. But i know one thing is for sure when I have a kid, i'm getting a rotti.

we have two kids aged 8 and 11 and we got a rotti as a pup from a very reputable breeder and the dog is awesome as a family member. The only problem we ever had was acctually caused by the kids, they would swing there coat sleeves around and Bella would think that they were trying to play so she would jump and bite at the sleeves. We went through a few coates before we were able to teach the kids not to swing thier sleeves. So far the best dog I have ever owned.

My husband had 2 rotti's growing up, and we currently have one now that just turned a year old. We do not have any children, but my neighbor has a 2 year old, who was actually about 14 months when I got our rotti. He has always been great around kids and very young children. Of course, with him being a puppy, he isn't very graceful and can easily knock a child down because of his size. Also rott's are known for their "bumping" because of their herding history. I take him to the dog park all the time, and people bring their young children out there all the time. I've never had my rotti harm or jump up on a child. I have actually witnessed him protecting my neighbor's child at the dog park from a larger more reckless dog. I was very impressed.

We have had rotties for over 25 years, along with 4 children and now 14 grandchildren...as long as you socialize and train them with firmness AND kindness there is no better dog.our current rottie, Roxie, is a rescue and despite being abused, within 3 weeks she was at home with the grandkids and gets so excited when they visit. the most important thing is to be consistant and don't let a rottie think they run the pack......

My female is wonderful with children. A friends 3 year old will actually put his hands in her mouth and all she does is lick! One of my children went through an "afraid of the dark and monsters" phase. So the dog started sleeping in his room. It's given him a sense of security, he sleeps through the night with no worries because he knows she is there to protect him.
