Standard Poodle Q&A

We are "baby sitting" my son's English Mastiff while he is deployed overseas. This is not the first time he has stayed with us for several months. He have never had a problem with him. He is the typical Mastiff, loving, playfull and protective. However, the other night we had company. A man was sitting, petting the dog and the dog seemed to be enjoying the attention, tail wagging. Then he silently showed his teeth and bumped the man in the mouth. What was up with that?!? He obviously was not trying to hurt the man, but this was clearly not affection. Any ideas?

Sometimes my mastiff will do the same when someone pets her. It is her way of giving "kisses". We discovered this when she did it to me and I let it go to see exactly what her point was. Her nibbling soon turned into tounge licks with teeth nibbles on my chin. We solved this by pulling away and in a stern voice, "No. Nice kisses." She stopped and no longer does this. If your mastiff feels danger or threatened, his hair will stand up on his back and become very still. You may or may not hear a very low growl. But one can definitely tell when the demeanor changes. Hope this helps and thank you and your son for serving our contry!
