Yorkshire Terrier Q&A

I have a 6 month old standard poodle. He is great, the only thing that bugs me is that he pees when some people try to pet him. He is OK with me, but he does it when my friends come by. How do I get him to sto this? I don't mind it when he is outside, but it gets me when he pees on my new carpet. Please help with some suggestions.

I think your poodle is nervous or afraid. You should try putting him outside and haveing your friends play or pet the poodle. It should get used to this and probably won't pee anymore. I know this from experience.

I had this same problem with my Standard Poodle when I first got him as a puppy. He did finally out grow it. I noticed that once he had greeted people and calmed down it stopped, so I would have him greet people outside, whether is was at home, Petco, the training facility, or wherever, until he settled down and then go back inside. I did a LOT of socialization with him and he outgrew it. He is now 9 years old and the best dog I have ever owned. He is a Therapy dog, has a UD and a RAE in Obedience and spends his evenings lying in my lap.

This is a submission problem that is common in young dogs. Socializing him a bit more might help, but you may also want to see a dog trainer or take him to obedience classes.

It's a common problem with a lot of young male dogs, and most grow out of it when they get older. A lot of them are just very excited/happy to meet people and can't control their bladder well enough yet. We also had our dog greet people outside, and eventually it stopped.
