Hi! I have 2 great dane sisters that are a year old now. They are phenominal. I rescued them and had so many people tell me that they would not get alone, nor would they bond with me. They get along great, and are extremely gentle, loving, and obedient. My cousin had a male Dane from the same litter and ended up re-homing him because the pup was so stubborn and my cousing did not have the skills to train him. I don't know that our experiences are typical though. When you go to pick your pup, you should meet the parents, watch the pups watch thier personality, be very selective. If you get a pup that is more naturally alpha than they will be much harder to train. Make sure you train your GD pup immediately, they grow fast. If you start training right away and make ure you pup knows you are boss, you will likely not have any problems at all, my danes are the sweetest and most gentle dogs I have evr owned, and Ive recued quite a few pups. Hope that helps. :) I have never had a female dane so I can't really give a good enough reason not to have a femle. My first dane is a male and then I got another dane as a rescue and he is a male they both just seem to be mellow and get along well. Very easily trainable with crates, sign language, and commands. I really think it is personal preference. I have a male Dane that I got when he was 10 months old. He can be a bit stubborn at times, but overall he is a great dog who listens at least 95% of the time. (The hardest thing is to get him to move when he's made himself comfy somewhere.)
